Medical Toxicology

The American Board of Preventive Medicine (ABPM), the American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM), and the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP) will offer the certifying examination in the subspecialty of Medical Toxicology in 2018. Physicians must submit an application to the Board through which they are certified and upon successful completion of the examination, subspecialty certification is awarded by the Board through which the physician submitted the application. Physicians who are certified by a Member Board of the American Board of Medical Specialties, other than ABP and ABPM, and who fulfill the admission criteria may apply through ABEM.

Admission criteria have been revised since the initial examination cycle to make the examination more accessible to Preventive Medicine specialists. The definition of "direct patient care" has been expanded to better reflect the practice of Preventive Medicine specialists in this area and the requirements for affiliation with an accredited poison center have been redefined to better accommodate Preventive Medicine specialists.
